2013 Salmon Fishing Outlook:

The following courtesy BC Outdoors Sport Fishing magazine for:

NORTHCOAST: Prince Rupert, Kitimat & Haida Gwaii (DFO Stat areas 1,2,3,4,5,6 and adjacent offshore areas)

CHINOOK – Mixed ocean abundance of Chinook from both the US and Canada are managed by using a baseline index and this region will enjoy the benefit of this index being 10% above the baseline. Although down from last year, it still means more great fishing and limits remain at the generous level of two per day and four in possession.

In-river opportunities remain generous in many systems in the Skeena region where limits vary but go as high as four per day.

COHO – Above average to abundant population of northern coho prevail in most northern areas. And they are above average and characterized in the top 25% of abundance levels. Oceans limits are four per day and eight in possession (hatchery or wild).

River limits also remain at normal levels for most Chinook-abundant areas in the Haida Gwaii and North Coast Mainland.

SOCKEYE – Below average sockeye return are expected in Northern region this year. Look for normal limits in the ocean for sockeye, scheduled to be at four per day and eight total. In-river opportunities vary by system and, in particular, sections of the Nass and Skeena will be linked to limits associated with in-season abundance and timing of passing stocks of concern. The Skeena is scheduled to be starting with sockeye non-retention and increasing based on in-season test fisheries.

PINK – While ocean limits are four per day and many in-river limits are two per day, the overall expectation is generally low catch. It is not a big pink salmon year for the Northern region and some areas are managed based on in-season estimates of abundance. The pink salmon are an even-year abundance fish so, 2013 being an odd year, smaller runs are anticipated.

CHUM – While chum isn’t one of the primary species sought after, it is a worthy catch, especially in prime ocean conditions. Marine limits are four per day but watch for potential reduced or low in-river limits as there are poor returns expected to both the Skeena and Nass Systems.

Hello Noel, I'd like to introduce you to Friends of Morice-Bulkley (we call ourselves FOMB). Friends of Morice-Bulkley are a grass-roots community group deeply concerned about proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline.

Check out our website www.friendsofmoricebulkley.ca for our take on the pipeline and links to research on the risks the pipeline poses to the steelhead and salmon resources of the Morice and greater Skeena. You will also find FOMB's evidence to the Gateway joint review panel on the genetically unique trophy rainbow trout of Babine Lake. You can now also find us on FaceBook and Twitter.

Safety and survival on water:

A good set of Oars and Oar Locks is NOT just for Drift-Boaters:

The smartest thing you can do is install a good set of oars and oar locks in your jet-boat and learn how to use them. If your engine quits just snap in your oars and turn your jet boat into a drift boat and either row to shore or float to the boat launch. I have had to do this a few times myself when I was guiding. I’ve seen too many jet boats and all they have is puny paddles. One person with one paddle is useless and even two persons with two paddles are difficult to control a large or even a small jet boat. Throw those paddles away and get yourself a good set of oars and oar locks. Do it now! It may save your life. Drifting out of control into a sweeper, log jam or boulders is no fun. Contact me anytime and I will be happy to give you tips how to row your jet boat.

Attention Anglers Cold Water Kills:

The waters of British Columbia are cold year-round.

If you fall in the water, remember the 1 – 10 – 1 Principle

YOU HAVE:

  • 1 minute to get your breathing under control;

  • 10 minutes before you are too numb to hold on or to tread water effectively; and

  • 1 hour before you become unconscious due to hypothermia.

PREVENT COLD WATER SHOCK:

  • Always wear your lifejacket on board. Make sure it fits properly and is in good working order.

  • Check the weather before departing.

  • Don’t overload your boat.

  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Over 90 percent of anglers who die while boating are not wearing a lifejacket. When you fall overboard, a lifejacket stored under your seat will do little to save your life.

Anglers are reminded to carry proof of competency such as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card on board at all times.

To prepare for a safe trip on the water, visit www.boatingsafety.gc.ca or call 604-666-2681 to speak with a Boating Safety Officer. Courtesy Transport Canada

Do this to your life jackets NOW:

Sew on an elongated pocket on the back and near the bottom edge of all your life jackets. Have either a zipper or Velcro closer. The pocket should be clearly labelled with large letters:

SURVIVAL ITEMS ONLY

You should put the following items into the pocket:

  • Silver space blanket

  • Fire starter

  • Water-proof matches/lighter

  • Candle

  • food/candy

  • Pocket knife, etc

These items can be vacuumed packed so your pocket does not have to be water proof. Actually some drain holes in the bottom may be a good idea.

Anything that will help a person survive at least one night and not die of hypothermia is a good idea, I think.

Thank you and please be safe…

Noel F. Gyger

PS I have friends who almost died of hypothermia in a boating accident. Wearing their lifejackets saved them from drowning but the cold and damp almost did them in. They would have been more comfortable during the night if they had some survival items in their life jackets.

Northwest B.C. man pleads guilty to illegal guiding

A MAN will fork over a hefty fine of $10,000 for illegally guiding on the Copper River.

Andrew Maillot pleaded guilty to one charge of illegal guiding in Port Coquitlam court and was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $9,000 to the “Habitat Conservation Trust Fund for fish conservation and enhancement and management in the Skeena Region.”

When handing down the sentence, the judge spoke to the difficulty of these types of investigations: how illegal guides have economic advantages over legal guides and the importance of general deterrence.

In September 2010, the Smithers Conservation Officer Service received a complaint alleging that Maillot was illegally guiding fishermen on the Copper River (also known as the Zymoetz River).

The investigation resulted in Wildlife Act charges of acting as a guide without proper licence, angling without licence or permit required by regulation and acting as guide for fishing without proper licence.

The Copper River is considered a “classified” river that flows into the Skeena River near Terrace and is widely considered one of the best rivers in the world to fish for wild steelhead. Angling guiding is an extremely important industry locally and these issues are a huge concern to local guides as it has huge impacts on their business.

As you all know the recreational sector's access to Pacific Coast Halibut been shut down twice in the last three years. If held to the current 88/12 allocation in 2011, we face an even shorter season.  The Sport Fishing Institute, British Columbia Wildlife Federation and the Southern Vancouver Island Anglers Association have formed an alliance and we are on a mission to right the imbalance and unfair allocation of Canada's share of Halibut.  Click for for more information how YOU can help.

Commentary by Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters. Nov. 5, 2010. Wes Owen invited Noel Gyger and I for a morning trip in the Kitimat Harbour to fish for Winter Chinook and do some Crabbing. The forecast was calling for "cloudy with showers". We were pleasantly surprised with calm seas, sunshine, good fishing and even better Crabbing. With honorable mention to Gail's (Noel's wife) Cookies. We hooked 6 Winter Chinook boating 3 beauties. The largest Chinook was 25lbs or better. The Stars of our fishing trip was the "E Chip" which is marketed by Pro Troll, Pro Troll's Hot Chip 11" Green Flasher and Hot Spot's Blue Green Flasher. Lure used was  a Luhr Jensen Les Davis Pt. Defiance #6 Spoon.  4 of the 6 Chinook were caught with these lures. Pro Troll products are not new on the market but this was the first fishing trip that I have fished with them. I spent some time with Russell Gahagan, Pro Troll's Regional Sales Manager at the Redl Show who impressed me enough to fish these Pro Troll's products. I am sure glad we did because they sure worked great this morning and proof is in the pictures! The other 2 Chinook were hooked by Wes's favorite Winter Chinook set-up which includes Luhr Jensen Abe and Al #1 Prism Flasher with Rhys Davis Blue/Green Anchovey Teaser and a Rhys Davis Anchovy. Noel, Wes and I had a great time catching Chinook as well as harassing each other and eating Gail's cookies while watching the rods.

The "piece de resistance" of our trip was the Crabbing. The Star of the Crabbing portion of our trip was as always "Brutus" Ace Line Hauler Crab and Prawn Puller. Vartan you are a genius! We were also using Crab traps distributed by Redl Sports with an upgraded hinge design on the doors which are excellent. We were using Lead rope from Danielson which reduces the potential for getting the Crab Trap ropes into the prop. The Crab Traps used ere Traps distributed by Redl Sports. The Bait Cages were Danielson Bait Cages. The Crab Gauge is made by Gibbs/Delta. Wes fishes with the best equipment including Shimano 8' Talora rods and Charter Special 2000LD reels combined with Scotty Orca Rod Holders. Scotty Electric Downrigger.  Scotty Power Grip Plus Release Clips.  Reels filled with Berkley Big Game 30lb test.  The leaders were Berkley Big Game 40lb test.  He also used a Berkley Battery powered hook hone. The High Line was trolled with a Gibbs 12oz Slip Weight. All the Chinook were netted with Redl Sports Sea King SK5000 net. He takes all his photos with Cannon hi end digital cameras. The "Right Tools for the Job" sure makes Fishing and  Crabbing a lot more enjoyable. We kept our limit of 18 Dungeness Crab (6 each) and put another 12 keepers back.  Wow! Good Weather, Good Fishing and Good Crabbing with Good Friends.  Life is Good! Note: to watch the video in the highest possible quality be sure to choose the option 480p on YouTube Click here for a direct link to this video  It is also listed on the Video webpage. Title: Winter Chinook and Crab and listed in category 2010 Chinook Clips. Clip #0082. Plays for 11:52 minutes.

Commentary by Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters. I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friends Noel Gyger and Syd and Elaine Pallister for Coho on the Kitimat River September 8, 2010.  Syd is one of the owners of Gibbs/Delta Tackle. We hooked 4 Coho during our short morning drift but Elaine managed to land the only one.  Hurray for Elaine! We had a great day on the Kitimat River.  We hooked our Coho on Luhr Jensen Hot Shots although we tried to entice Coho with Gibbs Koho and Croc lures. We watched a local angler, Randy Dean land 2 Coho with Koho lures.  Randy had an interesting comment that the Gibbs lures worked best at day break. The weather turned out to be outstanding and we had a great morning of fishing.  Thank You to Syd, Elaine and Noel for your wonderful company.

I was Coho fishing on the Kitimat River with Mike Herzberg and Ron Wakita on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.  We were pulling plugs out of Mike's Clackacraft drift boat.  I lost track of how many Coho we hooked but we hooked plenty.  Other drift boats were catching fish also and so were the bank fishermen. It was a "hot" day for Coho fishing. Choice of gear: 9 foot Fenwick Legacy rod, Ambassadeur 5600 C5 reel filled with Berkley Big Game 15-pound test line and Luhr Jensen Kwikfish, #35 Hot Shot and Rushton landing net. Video description by Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters. I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friends Noel Gyger and Ron Jones on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. We hooked 7 Coho and landed 4 in a half day of fishing. Among the 4 Coho we landed was a double header that Ron and I landed 2 for 2. It was an enjoyable morning of fishing with two very good friends. We caught some Coho, ate some Crab and told some fish stories while fishing in the Kitimat Harbour.

We were trolling with Hot Spot's Blue/Green UV Flasher and Rhys Davis Blue/Green Metallic Anchovie Teaser and Rhys Davis Anchovies from Berry's Bait and Tackle. The high lines were the more active using Gibbs 8 and 12oz. slip weights. These were the hottest rigs for this week but as many anglers can appreciate, the hot lures can change as the season progresses.  Note: to watch the video in the highest possible quality be sure to choose the option 480p on YouTube Click here for a direct link to this video It is also listed on the Video webpage. I was invited to fish with Mike Herzberg and Ron Wakita for Chinook on the Kitimat River a couple of weeks ago. Mike's drift boat is a Clackacraft. He has owned this boat for years and it still looks "brand new". More and more Clackacraft drift boats are showing up in our area. They are great boats! Their logo says, "fear no rock". The boat pictured at the end of this video is an 18 foot owned by Gill McKean. There is plenty of room for up to four anglers and the guide. Each angler has their own seat.

Ron was rowing at the time Mike hooked this fish with a G.Loomis Hot Shot rod, Ambassadeur 6500C5 reel, Kwikfish K13 silver blue plug and size 5/0 Gamagatsu hook with barb pinched down. We used the Gibbs "catch & release" net. We hooked 5 Chinook. Hope you enjoy the show (recorded in HQ).  Click here for a direct link to this video. It is also listed on the Video webpage. I was pulling plugs for Chinook on the Kitimat River with professional fishing guides Ron Wakita and Mike Herzberg for half a day on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. The river was high but in great shape. We saw lots of Chinook rolling. We went 1 for 3 which means we hooked three Chinook and landed one. Mike was the lucky angler. It was a bright fish weighing between 20-25-pounds. We were fishing with G.Loomis GL2, HSR 1025c Mag-Heavy Ex Fast Action 15-30 lb 1-6 oz. rod. Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 7000i LC (LC means line counter). 25 lb test Maxima fishing line. Luhr Jensen Kwikfish K13 (Ron named it after Mr. Magoo - Blue Magoo). Size 7/0 Gamagatsu barbless hook.  We really enjoyed fishing with the Scotty Orca Rod Holders and the oversized Gibbs landing net. The right tools for the job! Special thanks to Ron for bringing cooked Dungeness Crab PLUS Smokies which he barbequed in the drift boat while we fished. I thoroughly enjoyed eating them. I fished for Chinook (King) Salmon with Ron Wakita (L) and Mike Herzberg (R) on the Kitimat River on June 16, 2010. The weather and water conditions were near perfect. Mike is a professional fishing guide and it was a GREAT honour to fish with him again.  Click here to listen to a "Fishing with the best" podcast I recorded with Mike last season.   He really, really knows his stuff. He knows every "nook & cranny" of this river. We started early and finished  around noon and went 2 for 4 which means we hooked four Chinook and landed two. This fish was the biggest one weighing 32-pounds.  How did we land it, I don't know?  It was way down river and, I thought, wrapped around a root, heading for the second or third root...but somehow Ron Wakita pulled it back upstream.  Mike rigs his tackle with care.  I was sure something would break...but Mike's tackle held.  We were hotshotting with Luhr Jensen Kwik Fish K13 plug, G.Loomis Hot Shot Rod, Ambassadeur 6600C5 Reel, Blue 25 lb test Trilene Big Game line, 25 lb Maxima Chameleon leader and 4/0 Gamakatsu Siwash hook.  The right tools for the job! Skeena Kalum River Steelhead

I had the pleasure of fishing with Calvin Higano, Ron Wakita and Glen Kilcup on the Kalum River on Tuesday morning, April 20, 2010 for about four hours. Glen invited us on this trip with his Jetboat (more boat detail below) crack of dawn. We hooked four Steelhead and landed two plus a bunch of Trout. We landed one Steelhead using a silver spoon with size 3 OTT Gamagatsu Siwash hook rigged-up on a 7' Trophy XL rod and an Abu Cardinal 704 spinning reel spooled-up with 30lb Tuf-Line Duracast braided line. This rod and reel Combo handled this Kalum River Steelhead very nicely and was caught and released using the Gibbs "catch & release" net. The Gibbs C&R Net has a very soft mesh which allows anglers to net Steelhead and release them unharmed back into the river. Calvin landed the other Steelhead using a Sage 2106 rod and a Shimano Calcutta 250TE reel.  Calvin was the "Hot Rod" on this trip! Calvin landed one and had another two Steelhead on which released themselves (AKA long-line-release) after a bit of a tussle. Calvin is a very gifted angler who brought some very effective Steelheading techniques to the North West. One of his techniques Calvin calls "Dredging" and another would be the method which he cures his bait.  Calvin uses Pautzkse Pink Fire Cure on both his Chinook roe and on his Prawn bait. As most Steelheaders already know the quality of the bait is critical to angler success. A huge THANK YOU to Glen for an awesome morning fishing trip on the Kalum!

Here is some more info on Glen's custom "Rocket Jet Boat". This boat has a top speed of 48 MPH with 450 HP pushing water through a Hamilton Jet with a huge 10 inch impeller. When this thing takes off...sit down, hold your hat and hang-on! The Teflon bolted to the bottom of the boat allowed us to skim over the shallowest water.

I fished with Calvin Higano (left) and Ron Wakita on the Kalum River  for about four hours on April 15, 2010.  Calvin of  Nikka Fishing & Marine in Richmond, BC. My plan was to cover about 20 pools or more with my jet-boat...but...I was very surprised when I got to the put-in. The water had dropped about eight inches since my last time out. I was expecting it to be up at least a foot. This meant I could only get to three pools. The water was also extremely clean, kind of a tea colour not the usual glacial green. Anyway, we fished as best we could. Calvin was the hot rod landing one Steelhead and a BIG Bull Trout float fishing his favourite Loomis rod and Shimano Calcutta level wind reel. Skeena - Kalum River wild Steelhead Steelhead safe in a Gibbs "catch and release" net

I went Steelhead fishing with Ron Wakita and his son Brandon on the Kalum River on April 1, 2010. We spent only four hours fishing and hooked three Steelhead and managed to land two, plus a bunch of Trout. The biggest Steelhead was estimated to weigh over 20-pounds and it "is" the star of this video clip. The fish is a dark buck, heavy in spawning colour. We wanted to measure him but decided not to as we wanted to release this big guy as quickly as possible. I think we did OK as he swam away as soon as he was put back into the water. Brandon says this was the largest Steelhead he has ever landed. These fish can be caught with spin, conventional or fly rods.

For this fish Brandon was using: Spinning Rod: 8' Trophy XL. Spinning Reel: Abu Garcia Cardinal Stamina Drag. Line: Braided Tuf-Line Duracast. Lure: Gibbs Koho 55. Hook: 3/0 Gamakatsu Siwash (Open Eye) barb pinched down. Landing Net: Gibbs Catch and Release (soft mesh). Click here for a direct link to the video. It is also listed on the Video webpage. I was invited to go fishing with Ron Wakita and his good friend Wes Owens (Charter Boat owner) and his dog Shyla in the Kitimat Bay for ocean feeder "Winter Springs" (Chinook-King-Salmon) and Dungeness Crab on Friday, November 27, 2009. We fished for only 3.5 hours but were able to land one 24-pound feeder Chinook and 17 Dungeness Crab. We had a couple of other bites and landed a "shaker" Chinook. The "winter spring" was above average size, normally the feeder Chinook weigh around 8 to 15-pounds.  Crabbing was excellent! We were only one Crab short of our limit of 18 (six per person).

The name of  Wes' boat is "Little Kris" and is a very comfortable 30 foot Bay Liner with a 12 foot beam.  Wes has fished in the Douglas Channel for almost 40 years and has owned many boats. Wes prefers to focus most of his fishing efforts on the Kitimat Harbour Fishery and knows every rock and shelf in the harbour. Wes is considered by many boaters as the "Top Charter Boat for Kitimat Harbour Fishery".

The 24-pound feeder Spring (weighed by Wes' digital scale) was caught with a Shimano rod and reel, Gibb UV Flasher and purple True Roll Lure and Gamagatsu hooks

Then the fishing video clip starts. Chad hooks about a half dozen fish in a very short time, then sits on a log and gives us a few "key" pointers on how to be successful in this exciting fishery. Podcast  (9:38 minutes) includes photos, audio and a fishing video clip. Stay tuned for more of these "how to" podcasts!

Andrea Charlton, Rob Vodola and April Vokey with Kalum River Steelhead

Andrea Chartlon, Rob Vodola and April Vokey invited me to go fishing with them on the Kalum River on May 4, 2009. We hooked Steelhead in just about every pool we stopped to fish but we lost them all...until Andrea landed this fish. This was here first Steelhead landed ever.

Andrea's friend April Vokey is a fishing guide based out of Chilliwack, BC. In addition to fish guiding, April specialized in fly-casting instructionals, workshops, wilderness camps and ladies clothing. Here company is Flygal Ventures www.flygal.ca

I just about titled this video clip "Screaming Fly Gals" but I could not do it out of respect for the gals. I think the girls were a little embarrassed with ALL their screaming...but I understand, it is a gal thing...anyway, LANDING a Steelhead should have ALL of us (male or female) screaming! Congrats Andrea on landing your first Steelhead!

September 3, 2008 Chad Black demos FLY TYING

Fly Fishing on the Skeena River is RED HOT right now and one can go through a lot of flies.  Therefore you need to tie a simple fly quickly. Chad Black is a pro fly caster with both spey and single hand fly rods...and also really knows his stuff when it comes to fly tying.  In this clip Chad shows a simple but effective pattern he calls "Skeena River Series".  This one is tied in "bold" RED.  The video clip is not cut or edited and shows it takes only about 2 1/2 minutes to tie.  Cast here to watch the video under Tips and Techniques (Video Clip #0004)

August 30, 2008 DOUBLE-HEADER Coho (Silver) Salmon fishing the the Skeena River

I was invited to join Randy Marshall and his long time repeat client Mr. Guy Gangl of Luxembourg for a day of fishing on the Skeena River.  We caught numerous Steelhead and Coho (Silver) Salmon.  The highlight of the day was landing a double-header Coho.

Update from Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

On the left is Genady Davidov of Ontario releasing a beautiful wild Steelhead back into the river.  He was with a party of three fishermen who specialize in the "high-tech" float fishing system using 14 foot noodle rods and center pin reels.  They did extremely well.  On the right is a photo of  an Orvis Spey fly reel.  Both systems work well on our rivers.  We guide you how "you" like to fish.

Fishing up to today has been excellent for both Steelhead and Coho.  Lower Skeena tribs have been fishing very well for Northern Coho (a good bump of fresh fish just came in) and  the Skeena tribs for Steelhead have been fishing well also.  Our repeat guest, of many times, Gary Bartholomew landed an estimated 18-pounder.  Guiding on the Kalum River is over as of October 15 so please contact Noel to book the season-opener on March 15, 2008.  We still have a few spots open.  We still have spots open for the Zymoetz (Copper) River after November 1 this year.  See you soon.

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

The Kitimat River was in great fishing condition until Tuesday evening.  The river height jumped and was not fishable Wednesday due to wind and rain storm.  The height is dropping almost as fast as it came up and if there no more rain it may be fishable by the weekend.

The Douglas Channel:  There is little activity due to the weather.

River conditions today as of 10 AM:  Skeena high and borderline fishable.  Zymoetz (Copper) River dirty.  Kalum River high but clean and fishable.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on October 28.

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Kitimat River:

The Kitimat River today is in great fishing condition.  The water is low and clear.  The hot spots for Coho are the upper Sawmill run and the first Wash Out.  There are still some brighter Coho but the majority are showing spawning colours.

Douglas Channel:

The water is flat and calm.  It would be a great autumn day to be on the water today.  The killer whales have been reported in the harbour twice this week.  They could be chasing late Coho, baitfish, winter springs or all of the above.  There have been no boaters out fishing to know for sure but the great weather we have forecasted for this weekend more boaters should be out including myself.  Stay tuned.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on October 21.

Update from Noel Gyger and family

My family came up to visit and fish with me for a few days.  We fished on the Kalum for Coho (L) Lyle Hilton, Mike Gyger & Judge Gyger on October 16 and Zymoetz (Copper) River for Steelhead today, October 17.  Rob (Tony) Vodola's mug got in the shot somehow:-) These photos tell the story.  Today we landed six Steelhead and two Coho.  My brother in the red shirt landed his first Coho ever.    Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on October 21.

October 11, 2007

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

There have been reports of Coho (Silver) Salmon being caught in the upper Kitimat River especially the first wash out area.  The Coho that are being caught range in colour with the majority of them showing spawning colours.  This is typical for the Kitimat River during this time of year.  The river is fishable today but the river is rising with the recent rain that we are having.  Cutthroat trout have been reported through the Kitimat River and is a great fishery if the river conditions remain decent.  As usual this time of year we are totally reliant on the weather.  Stay tuned.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on October 14.

October 4, 2007

Concerns were expressed by the local Sport Fishing Advisory Board (SFAB) in Terrace and Prince Rupert regarding the size of the Coho runs in the lower Skeena River tributary Rivers.  A conference call was planned to discuss the situation but was cancelled when on October 2nd the DFO said, " The coho situation on the lower Skeena appears to be improving.  It appears that the runs are late and the most recent field information we have shows good numbers of bright fish are showing up.  There is not allot of fishing effort but success is good in most areas where there is effort.  Given this information we are not contemplating any management actions to the in-river sport fishery at this time.  We will continue to monitor and hopefully get good aerial counts once the water clears up and the levels drop."

Update from Nicholas Dean Lodge

Dustin Kovacvich guided a group of three anglers from Ontario.  Fishing for Steelhead and Coho was fantastic!  They landed 20 Steelhead plus numerous Coho.  They were fishing the Ontario "high-tech" float fishing system with 14-foot noodle rods and center-pin reels.  The rods were actually modified 14 foot Spey fly fishing rods.  They "bumped up" their tippet strength to 12-pound test to handle our bigger fish.  Chad Black reports their fly fishing guests were having great success also.

Update from Randy's River Guiding

Randy Marshall reports good success for his two clients fishing the lower Skeena tributaries for Coho.  They landed 5 on October 1 and 5 on October 2nd and lost a few.  Jeff and Ernie are from England and enjoyed the fishing and really enjoyed the beautiful river scenery.

Update from Reliable Guide and Charters

Ron Wakita reports the Kitimat River fishing conditions remain volatile as the water level rises and falls with the fall rains.  Although the river has not risen in height and that the river is not fishable, the fishing is far from ideal.  Alex Nemeth guided Pat Butler who hooked six coho and landed only one on Sunday, September 30th.  The river is dropping today and conditions should improve.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on October 7.

Update from Andrew Rushton of Kalum River Lodge

Fishing for me has been spotty and one has to work to catch fish.  Water is high but clean on the Skeena tribs which means the Coho don't hold up in pools as usual.  The highlight was an 18-pound Coho.  We are also catching Steelhead but we got to work for them.  It is not the "big easy" as we are used to.

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

The Kitimat River is still producing Coho.  Alex Nemeth guided clients from Austria on Sunday September 24th and they landed 5 coho.  On Monday Alex guided Bruce Busby and Paul Lewis and they landed three Coho.  The Hatchery run produced twelve Coho on Monday but only two on Tuesday.  The Coho that were caught had sea lice and are moving through the lower end.

Update from Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

Coho fishing on the lower Skeena tribs is slow as the water has been high and the fish are moving right through not "pooling-up".  When this happens we have a saying, "the fish can be anywhere".  Once the water stabilizes and drops a little the bite should be back on.  Dead drifting a dry fly for Steelhead is working with a lodge guest beaching an 18-pounder.  There are a lot of Cutthroat Trout in the waters now and they are usually easy to catch.  Kind of keeps you busy while you are waiting for that Steelhead.

Update from Randy Marshall of Randy's River Guiding

I guided one fellow fly fishing yesterday on the Kalum River and although we tried as many as eight pools and runs he was unable to connect with a Steelhead or a Coho but he did catch quite a few Trout and Dolly.  The water was up and I guess the fish were on the move.  A couple days ago I could see Coho rolling everywhere.  It's been raining off and on over the last few days.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on September 30.

Update from Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

Weather good.  Water good.  While fishing has not been "fast and furious," those anglers willing to put their time in have been rewarded with colours of chrome.  The Skeena River has been producing the most Steelhead hookups and some decent Coho fishing, although its tributaries have been producing fish as well.  In fact, a couple of experienced Spey fishermen even raised 10 Steelhead "players" to the dry fly, though most fish did not connect.  On a few of the Skeena tributaries, the dry fly can actually be more productive than wet flies in clean, low water conditions.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on September 23.

September 20, 2007

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Kitimat River: Mike Herzberg (L) on of our associate guides drifted today and hooked eight coho and landed six.  Mike hooked most on hot shots.  There are a few being caught below the hatchery in the lower portion of the river

Douglas Channel: There are a few schools of Coho in the Kitimat harbour.  My daughter Julie and son Corey (R) fished the morning bite and caught three.  Don Carlson and his group fished both slack tides and they boated seven.

Water conditions in the Skeena River region are excellent.  Skeena River is a tad cloudy.  All waters have been dropping and cleaning since Sept 5th.   May not be the best condition to move a lot of  "northern" Coho (Silver) Salmon up into their trib rivers but Spey fly fishing Steelhead on the Skeena River is excellent.  Check out the Sockeye top left photo landed by Troy Adams.   Did I say the Spey fly rods are catching Coho also?   Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on September 9.

Update from Andrew Rushton of Kalum River Lodge

Andrew and his three guests (two were on their 7th trip to the Skeena River) were Spey fly fishing the last couple of days and they landed five Steelhead (lost 9) and the usual multiple array of wild Salmon which was plenty of action to keep everyone happy!  Two are experienced with the  Spey fly rod system and the third chap (Wayne Davidson) is learning.  Will he get hooked on the Spey fly rod is the question?  Of special note (highlight) were an 18-pound Steelhead, 13-pound Coho and 10-pound Sockeye.  River came up today and the fishing slowed down but they still managed to hook into four Steelhead (lost them) and a bunch more Salmon, including the "elusive" Skeena River Chum Salmon.  The fish just kept migrating upriver heading for their home tributaries.

September 5, 2007 (1st update today)

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

The Kitimat River is in excellent shape and there is a fresh run of Coho.  Alex Nemeth of Reliable Guides drifted with our clients Beverly and Mikita Burden and they landed their limit of four Coho and released and lost a bunch more.

Our Mobile Tackle Van logged 11 caught under the Haisla Bridge this morning and eight landed at the lower Dike.  The morning bite and the high tides seem to be the best time to fish for Coho in the lower end.

Update from Dustin Kovacvich of Nicholas Dean Lodge - Outpost Camp

We had a good shot of rain yesterday which caused the Skeena River to rise but lucky did not really get too dirty, although it did slow down the fishing.  Today fishing was a bit slow for Steelhead but some real big ones where hooked.  Sockeye, Coho and Chum fishing is spotty but their are still plenty of Pinks to catch.

With this bump of high water the hope is it will bring in a good number of Coho into the lower tribs.

Fishing for Steelhead on the Zymoetz (Copper) River is slow at this time.

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Kitimat update:  With recent high tides and the bump in the river height due to some rain more Coho should be migrating into the Kitimat River.  Mike Herzberg and Pat Oliver launched this morning to get dialed-in on the sweet spots for Coho for clients we have booked for next week.  The results of their drift were not available at the time of the writing of this update but will be included in this week's report.

Sea Run Cutthroat Trout are also starting to run on the Kitimat as demonstrated by the photo of this 4lb beauty caught by Pat Oliver.  Cutthroat are enhanced by the Kitimat Hatchery and has become an excellent fishery especially on a fly.

I was invited to fly fish with Dustin Kovacvich, owner of the lodge and his three clients (father-son-daughter).  They were fly fishing the Skeena River for Steelhead, Sockeye, Coho and Pink Salmon.  Both Spey fly rods and single hand fly rods were used.  I lost count of all the fish they hooked but I managed to take video of 3 Steelhead, 3 Sockeye, 3 Pinks and 1 Coho and I didn't even stay with them the full day. Plus numerous high rez photos. I'd guess they caught about 60 fish.  It was an absolute fantastic day! The video clips will soon be posted on the website.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on August 19.

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Kitimat River:  The river continues to produce fresh Pink Salmon with sea lice and speratic groups of Coho (Silver) Salmon.

I had the pleasure of taking the Multi Level Care patients on a fishing trip Monday Aug 13.  We landed 8 pinks and a coho.  Mother nature provided an outstanding day for fishing.  Mary (the Recreation Supervisor) provided Kentucky Fried Chicken for lunch and the Fish Gods produced some nice fish for the patients.  Special Thanks to Marc and Bonnie Girard, Dianne, Al Smith, Lou, Pat and the store staff for their help making this fishing trip special for the folks from the hospital.

Douglas Channel:  Alain for Alain Charters reports boating a 120lb halibut with his client Bob Hansen and his fishing party.  Congratulations to Bob and friends.

The Salt fishery is producing down both sides of Hawksbury Island.  To clarify, the salt water channel leading to the open water from Kitimat is commonly referred to as the Douglas Channel.  In actual fact, the salt water splits into two channels; Douglas Channel on the west side of Hawksbury Island and Devastation Channel on the east side.  Then there are numerous reaches and passages leading out to open water.

Two hot spots are Money Point on the Douglas side and Fish Trap on the Devastation side.  The harbour fishery is psoriatic with boaters catching 4 or five one morning and then off the next.  Phillip Thom caught 4 coho in his sail boat yesterday morning.  With big tides this week we should start to experience higher catch rates.  Stay Tuned!  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on August 19.

Update from Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

Six guests caught about 300 fish on the Skeena River on August 9th; 20-pound Steelhead; about 20 Coho; about 50 Sockeye and the rest Pinks.  One of our guests who came fishing with us last year landed a 25-pound Steelhead.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on August 12.

August 7, 2007 (3rd fishing update today)

Update from Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Kitimat River:  is in great shape with all species of salmon being caught by anglers.  The eagles and the bears are also harvesting their share of the salmon.  Chinook are still being caught but must be released.  Chum are running but not yet back to typical levels.  The pinks are thick and the Coho run is exception for this time of year.

Douglas Channel:  fishing in the harbour is picking up for Pinks, Chum and Coho.  The outer waters has a mass of Coho waiting to migrate our way.  There is also more large halibut being caught.  There was a report an hour ago of a 68" halibut caught.  The halibut chart calculates 68" as a 163 lb.

August 7, 2007 (2nd fishing update today)

Update from Mike Herzberg:  Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters  Hope you had a fun time out on the salt today...weather sure was nice.  I ended up hooking 7 Coho and landing 6 on the Kitimat River today.   Kept this 11 lb. and a 7 lb.  Both at Coho Flats.  Released a small  Blueback here and lost another Coho.  At Wop's Rocks I went 3 for 3.  Released two around 6 lbs. and another Blueback.  I can't recall ever hooking this many Coho in one drift this early in August.  I also released a dark 30-pound Chinook.

Update from Chad Black and Jeff Langley:  Guides for Nicholas Dean Lodge had a day off and went fly fishing for Sockeye, Pink and Steelhead.  The had a great day.  The above two photos are of very fresh Sockeye Salmon.  Cast here to view the two video clips.  They are titled and numbered SOCKEYE 0001 and SOCKEYE 0002

July 31, 2007

Update from Mike Herzberg:  We drifted from Cablecar to Big Spruce this morning.  Kept four bright Pinks as well as this Coho.  Hooked Pinks pretty well everywhere we fished.  The Coho I caught at Wop's Rocks...hit a purple jig.  The Pinks were all caught on purple as well.  Saw one bright Spring lost at the takeout.

Update from Ron Wakita:  "Where have all the Chum Gone?" is the most commonly asked question on the Kitimat River.  There are two or three holes on the lower river that have some pretty good numbers of Chum; the gravel bar below the Hatchery, The Railway run and the middle lower Dike.  There is still not the number of Chum in the entire system that we are typically accustomed to having this time of season.  Smart money still says the Chum will come late and all at once.  Stay tuned.

The bright spot has been the "incredible" Chinook return this year.  There  was discussion within DFO about possibility of extending the Chinook retention date but that has NOT happened as yet.  The Pink return also continues to be really strong with lots of Pinks being caught though out the system.

The other added highlight are the numbers of Coho caught already on the Kitimat River.  We have logged eleven Coho with the help of our mobile tackle van, our guides and our tackle store.  The hatchery brood collection crew has also caught a bunch in their nets.  This has the early indicators of a "really strong" Coho season yet to come.   Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on August 5.

July 5, 2007 Update from the Kitimat River and ocean for July 4th.  Talked with Ron Wakita and he reports good fishing on the river.  Water is in great shape.  At the "Pump House" pool the bank fisherman hooked 22 and landed 10.  "Lower Dike" run hooked eight and landed two.  One of Ron's drift boat guides went 2 for 7 (hooked 7 landed two).  My family and I fished with ocean charter guide,  Wes Owen in the Douglas Channel on his nice, comfortable, 11 foot beam Bayliner "Lil Kris".  Wes has a "life-time" of experience fishing these beautiful waters.   We hooked two chinook and landed a beauty around 24-pounds...and kept 17 Dungeness crabs.  Guess what my family is having for supper tonight?  Skeena River still high and not fishable.  Clean seams at the rivers mouths seem to be the best option...or head over to Kitimat.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on July 8.

Hi Noel, sorry for not contacting you sooner but I truly have been busy catching UNREEL fish, this is the best spring salmon year I have seen in 17 years, and they are all huge!  The 9 pics I sent are of the last couple of weeks, as you can see many of the fish are over 50 lbs, the largest being 67 lbs. It was quite a battle to land.  This kind of fishing will mean good things for you boys and girls upstream!!!  Calm waters.  Randy Janzen of Unreel Charters in Prince Rupert.  Subscribe here to receive the Full Report via e-mail on July 8
